„In einem Lexikon aus dem Jahr 1904 heißt es: Chemie, psychische: Ausdruck für das Entstehen neuer geistiger Gebilde und Werte aus der Synthese von Bewußtseinselementen. Der Ausdruck zuerst bei J. ST. MILL[2], dann besonders bei HÖFFDING[4] (Psychol.2, S. 326), WUNDT (S. Synthese). Vgl. Synthese.“ Die hier angesprochenen Gedanken fallen heute am ehesten in die Gebiete der Kognitionswissenschaften oder der Psychologie ganz allgemein. Eine gänzlich andere Bedeutung hatte das Wort Psychophysik ↗

Dort heißt es auf Seite 533 zum Beispiel zum Stichwort mental chemistry: in which it is proper to say that the simple ideas generate, rather than they compose, the complex ones” sowie auf Seite 534: “The generation of one class of mental phenomena from another, whenever it can be made out, is a highly interesting fact in mental chemistry; but it no more supersedes the necessity of an experimental study of the generated phenomenon than a knowledge of the properties of oxygen and sulphur enables us to deduce those of sulphuric acid without specific observation and experiment”.
