Johannes Philoponos, geboren um 490 in Alexandria (Ägypten), gestorben im Jahr 575, war ein griechichsprachiger Philosoph. Er lebte in der Zeit, als das römische Reich endgültig in Ost- und Westrom gespalten wurde. In Alexandria und Athen, beide in Ostrom, dem späteren Byzanz gelegen, musste Philoponos sich immer wieder zwischen christlichen und heidnischen Positionen entscheiden oder diese abwägen. Er verfasste mehrere Deutungen der naturphilosophischen Werke von Aristoteles. Für die Geschichte der Physik interessant ist, dass er schon früh die Idee Aristoteles' verwarf, dass die Geschwindigkeit beim Fall nur vom Gewicht abhänge. Philoponos griff mit der Idee des Impetus schon gut 1000 Jahre vor Galilei und Newton dem Konzept der Trägheit und der kinetischen Energie vor. Siehe dazu auch Impetustheorie ↗
