The word Lernwerkstatt in German is closely linked to very specific educational ideas. By definition a Lernwerkstatt is a permanent environment rich in practical hands-on learning material that encourages students to experiment and work as independently as possible. The English word Learning Lab is often used in a similiar sense but it also covers temporary more project like situations. These could better be described as hands-on workshops.
