Unterhalb von etwa 60° Celsius ist der Wachs fest. In der Nähe der Flamme schmilzt er dann. Dadurch kann er durch Kapillarkräfte den Kerzendocht hinaufwandern. Im Bereich der Flamme wird er dann zu Gas. Dieses Gas zündet dann, brennt und bildet die sichtbare Flamme.
