In German "viertel zwölf" and "viertel vor zwölf" must not be confused. The first version means: a quarter on the way from elevn to twelve o'clock, which is either 11.15 or 23.15. The latter means: a quarter still before us on the way from eleven to twelve o'clock, which can either mean 11.45 or 23.45.
